I just got an email from AGLOCO [referral link] letting me know that the viewbar for their program has been released and is now ready for download. I figured I’d throw out the word about this site because it seems like an interesting idea. Here’s a blurb from their site:

AGLOCO™ is the first Internet based economic network, which enables you as a Member to ‘Get your share of the internet.’ Advertisers, search companies, online merchants and other businesses currently pay lots of companies to deliver people like you to them to get your attention and sell goods. With AGLOCO™ they will be paying YOU.

AGLOCOâ„¢ is also a global community of Internet users whose active Members can be paid for all their online activity. By downloading our proprietary Viewbarâ„¢ technology, members benefit from engaging yet unobtrusive content tailored to their interests. AGLOCOâ„¢ also pays its members to refer their friends to the community (and for those friends to refer more friends through four levels of extended referrals.)

I’m not really sure how the program will end up faring. All Advantage was popular years ago, but went the way of the dodo with the dot-com crash. Whether AGLOCO will turn out to be a decent way to make a few bucks while reading the daily news, we’ll see. If you’re interested, check it out.

Update: Just an FYI: their site seems to suffering badly from all of the folks who are trying to download the viewbar. I’m not even able to connect to the site right now. If you can’t get it working, check back later; I’d say it’ll be fine once it isn’t being hammered.

(As an aside… what’s up with the name Agloco? If anything, it’s memorable, I suppose…)

I try avoid writing posts here solely to share a single link, but I’m going to break my rule for this: I Can Has Cheezburger?. I learned about I Can Has Cheezburger? when it moved onto the WordPress.com platform. The site is basically a funny picture site, specifically, funny animal pictures (the vast majority involving cats), with captions. I’ve been subscribed to it in Google Reader ever since I came across it. Here’s the latest one posted, to give you an idea of what the site offers:

If you don’t find that hilarious, you probably won’t like the site. (And if you don’t find that hilarious – what’s wrong with you? ) Here, I’ll try one more to sway you to the awesomeness of the site:

If that doesn’t sway you, I give up.

I just came across this while reading my feeds, and I must send out a thanks to Jason for sharing it: the animated Bayeux Tapestry. For those that don’t know (shame on you), the Bayeux Tapestry shows the events of the Norman invasion of England. See also this page which has a breakdown of the tapestry, scene by scene. (Trivia: The Normans were initially Vikings. The name Norman is derived from either Northmen or Norsemen.)

If you’re interested in the invasion and want to know more, I can recommend 1066: The Year of the Invasion by David Howarth. I read it a year or two ago, and found it to be a great read.

Working through my humongous backlog of feed items, I’m coming across some great stuff, and I refuse to not share it. So, here we are:

A very large piece of graffiti, showing (scientifically incorrect) evolution in action. Scientifically correct or not, that’s just awesome.

First, look at the beta version of AOL.com’s home page. Then, take a look here. See anything that looks, ahem, similar? Heh.

Astronomers have found the most Earth-like planet outside our Solar System to date, a world which could have water running on its surface. Very, very cool. Of course, at this point, we don’t know if it does have water on it, but the estimated temperatures for the planet show that if water is on the planet, it would mostly be in liquid form.

This video has convinced me to never, ever eat freshly sliced octopus tentacles. Yuck.

Update: I just took another look at the graffiti evolulution picture, and I’m not sure if it’s real. It looks too clean. Does anyone else get this impression? Or even better, can anyone verify if it’s legit or not? I tried going to the main Yonkis.com site, but it seems to be (mostly) porn stuff. It’s also in Spanish, so I can’t read much of what they’re writing about.

Giving up email? I can see where he’s coming from. I don’t get huge amounts of email like many people, but it still takes up a bit of my time. Having said that, I won’t be giving it up; I have too many friends on the internet who wouldn’t be able to afford to call me all the time (and vice versa).

Wikipedia is an amazing thing. With such excellent articles on thousands of topics, it’s a bit disconcerting that apparently, many folks are simply using it to read up on penises, oral sex, and Family Guy.

This is one big hole. It’s an open pit mine near Mirny, Russia, East Siberia. A few stats: 525m deep, 1200m in diameter. For those of you who don’t do metric very well (like me): that comes out to a little over .3 miles deep, and .75 miles in diameter.

I read about this yesterday and thought it pretty cool: the New York Times is now offering TimesSelect to university students and faculty for free. With TimesSelect, you get access to op-ed columnists, news columnists, and “The Archive”, which consists of the New York Times all the way back to 1851. All you need to sign up is an email address ending in .edu. Check it out.

Speaking of the New York Times, here’s an article from today’s paper about Richard W. Sonnenfeldt, who was the chief interpreter for the Nuremberg war crimes trials of the leading Nazis in 1945-1946. It’s interesting to read what Sonnenfeldt said about some of the top leaders, like Goering or Speer: that they were just like people you’d be meet on the street.

Here’s a (mostly complete) transcript of Will Wright’s talk at SXSW. It’s pretty long, but worth the read. And, if you don’t know what Spore is, you can read more about this video game here. And, if you’re now interested in Will Wright and the Spore video game (and you should be), here is an interview with Will Wright about the game.

In one of my previous Asteroid Belts, I linked to some stuff about a tomb being found, which supposedly held the remains of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and their family. Here’s a bit more about it.

What if the asteroid that killed off dinosaurs had missed? (via the link maniac, kottke.org) There’s even a bit of speculation that dinosaurs might have evolved like humans, but most scientists (and me as well, as an aside) think that’s nonsense. While it’s hard to predict how life on earth would have evolved, in short: dinosaurs probably would have continued to rule the joint, getting bigger and smarter. Humans might have popped up on the radar for a bit, but most likely, we wouldn’t have stuck around too long.
