We have our own "arse" here: Dieter Bohlen. The channel had to pay 100000 Euro fine for what he said on the last season of Germany's Idol. :-)

But really: The judges should get snippy with the show staff. These casting shows always have pre-castings, where other people chose the good ones and some really bad ones - to make the show funny. These people are invited to come again a week later in the same clothes and perform in front of the real jury.

This also explains, why the bad candidates can be obstinate: They think they are really good, because they've already made it through the pre-casting. It's reminds me a little bit of wrestling.... Everything is pre-arranged.

Well, I think part of the reason the judges get a bit snippy with bad contestants is related to what I mentioned above: not only are they bad, but they can be rather cocky and kind of obstinate. After watching them flailing about, I'd probably be a bit irritated too when the guy got all defensive and put out. Also, I think it's just become standard procedure to get a "nice" judge, a "neutral" judge, and a "bad" judge. Maybe this started with American Idol with Simon (I've never watched A.I., but I've heard Simon was a real arse).

I'd also argue that the judges are instructed to act a certain way, so as to have certain dynamics between them. Piers on America's Got Talent can be quite a jerk when responding to bad contestants, but in the behind the scenes stuff, he comes across as a very nice guy.

I really do love casting shows, but I think the judges are always so terrible - in the USA, in Great Britain, in Germany. The TV stations do their best to find the meanest B-celebrities for these shows. Why do they have to be so cruel? Take for example the polka dancers: Everybody laughed at them - which I think is completely okay. But is it really necessary that the judges insult them?

We recently had two casting shows (one for singin, one for acting) here in Germany that were different. Of course everybody still laughed about the crazy people, who thought they where talented but weren't. But the judges treated them with respect, they didn't insult the people or their personality, they only made fun about the performances. It was a pleasure to watch, really.
