Is failing a final exam funny?

After my experience this morning, I guess it is for some.

The past three days I’ve been studying for my two history final exams, which are today. This morning at 8AM, I took my first one. I went to the college an hour early to go over my notes and outlines once more before the exam. There were quite a few of my fellow classmates there looking over their notes and talking. A great deal of the conversation going on went something like this:

Student A: So, did you study?
Student B: Ehh.. no, not really. A little. I’m going to fail big time. [laughter]
Student A: [laughter] Yeah, same here. I just didn’t feel like it. I’ll probably get a D. Oh well.

I heard a lot of variations on this conversation, but essentially what I got out of listening to them was this: somehow or another, to some people, it’s humorous to fail an exam.

I don’t really get this attitude at all. What’s funny about it? You’ve just spent the past 3 months of your life going to this class to get a grade, and now that you’ve screwed around and not studied for the final exam, it’s funny that you’re going to fail, and potentially fail the whole course? I don’t see the humor in that at all.

Oh well. To each their own I guess. I’m fairly confident that I did well on my first exam, and I’m prepared for my second one this afternoon at 4PM. My last final is on Thursday, which is my math one… it is, incidentally, the one I’m dreading the most.

Actually, I recall an incident where I had failed to decently study for an exam (some minor law course). I was never a nervous type: either I knew my stuff and was confident, or I hadn’t done enough and faced the consequences.

This professor was a bit of a nut case: he liked sneaking up on people in hallways, scaring them witless or performing slide tackles on students yelling First snow! – that kind of guy.

Well, the exam began (oral) and it crashed and burnt pretty quickly. I don’t know how it happened, and I’ll spare you the details, but one of us must have made some laconic remark and both of us just ended up laughing uncontrollably.

I stumbled back into the hallway, belly aching from laughter, and told the others I had flunked catastrophically but never had a more fun exam.

Okay, granted it was a one=off and I did do very well in September, but yeah, unbelievably: failing an exam can be funny. Just the once, though ;-)

Nils: Funny story. I suppose failing an exam can be funny… but like you said, just once, and under special circumstances. :)
