Priviet!
I think you had enough of good reasons why to study Russian. I am, same as you, a foreign language geek and I started to study Russian after I heard it somewhere on TV and thought: "this language sounds good".

Anyway, I wish you good luck with Russian. I know that the beginning is terrible - all this sounds, letters and completely different grammar... but as you start thinking in Russian it gets much easier.

Da Swidania!

John: Yes, I agree, language is deeply connected with culture. I'm just saying that there wasn't any particular aspect of Russian culture that drew me to the language, mostly because I didn't know much about Russian culture to begin with. :)

Thanks for commenting!

http://www.mester.com -- spanish courses
I agree with your friend. I studied Italian because I loved 'pasta' and 'ice cream'; and I will study Spanish because of their way of living. I also think a language is deeply connected with culture.

He is indeed an interesting fellow. ;)

Max Hastings' Armageddon has been added to me "to read" list. It grows and grows and grows... Regarding the movie, I'll try to find it. It shows up as available on OhioLINK, but it's not letting me request it. I'm thinking that even though it shows as available, I can't get it simply because it's a video. I've never had any success in the past in getting audio or audiovisual materials via OhioLINK. I'll ask around at the college library.

Basque, huh? I just read a bit about it on Wikipedia and it sounds fairly interesting.

I take it you agree, then, that communism looks quite nice on paper? :) And about the feds... hey, I'm allowed my freedom of speech and thought in this country! At least for the time being, anyway. :|

That friend of yours sounds like an interesting guy :-D

Obviously, I had always been aware how large the Soviet role was in WWII (a subject we also share as an interest), but it wasn't until I read Max Hastings' book Armageddon that it fully dawned on me. And that was only a few years ago. The soviet sacrifice was massive and unimaginable. It's strange how we don't hear much about that in books or films. If you can find it, you should watch Idi i Smotri by Elem Klimov, though: it's awesome.

Not having a real reason isn't a bad thing — not everything needs implementing in jobs or careers. I'd love to study Basque one day, simply because I saw a film about Basque cows once. I'm sure that would never be 'useful' in any way.

As for your thoughts on communism, good on you ;-) But, are you sure you won't be stalked by the feds now?
