Don't know if you've heard of the Blog a Penguin project? Runs in the UK and sends people a free Penguin classic if they promise to review it within 6 weeks. There's some good reviews on there (and some really rubbish ones) and it's a great place for ideas: http://www.blogapenguinclassic.co.uk/site/pcBooks.php5 Bit late maybe but the year’s not over yet. Pillars of the Earth - Ken Follet (Usally writes spy novels, but this is a historical novel about a stone mason who wants to build a cathedral, i.e. be more than a laborer - become an artist. I was amazed at the realism. Hard to believe that the writer didn't actually live in those times.) A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court - Mark Twain (Not to be confused with the countless lowbrow movie spinoffs.) Some of my favorite books are:
