Some more thoughts on Battlestar Galactica

Well, I think I can officially call myself a Battlestar Galactica addict now. I rented the 5 disc Season 1 set 4 days ago. I finished watching the entire season yesterday afternoon. That’s quite a bit of BSG in 4 days…

Some random, unsorted thoughts on the series (considering I’ve now seen all of Season 1, as well as the 5 newest episodes of Season 3):

  • I really, really, really dislike Gaius Baltar. I realize Number Six often appears and influences his thinking, but he’d still be an arrogant slimeball even if she didn’t appear. In Exodus, part 2, I was really wishing Felix Gaeta would give Baltar his deathwish. As usual, Baltar slithered his way out of it. Grr.
  • William Adama is an awesome character. Olmos has done an excellent job in playing the part. I like a lot of the other characters quite well, but for me, Adama makes the show.
  • When I watched Battlestar Galactica: The Story so Far, I thought I was quite fond of Laura Roslin. After watching all of Season 1, I’m not so sure. This may very well have to do with the fact that The Story so Far was narrated by Roslin, and I think it gave things from her view. In truth, she did a lot of sneaky things during Season 1 that I just didn’t dig much. She just came across as more of a conniving politician than she did in The Story so Far. She still has her good points – i.e., she genuinely cares about the future of the human race – but she’s also quite fond of her political position, too.
  • I thought that the Cylon Raiders were fully mechanical at first, like the Cylon Centurions. I was a bit creeped out when it was found that they’re half machine, half biological.
  • In Season 1, there were episodes that dealt with both water for the fleet, as well as fuel. However, I don’t remember anything about food. Where are they getting enough food to feed 50,000 people a day? Are they growing produce and raising cattle on Cloud 9 or what?
  • I love how the fighter ships, particularly the Vipers, are more maneuverable than in most sci-fi shows. It’s really cool to see a Viper stop near instantly, flip around, and head back the other way.
  • Starbuck is a really interesting character. She can be a real pain in the butt, but you can’t help but like her anyway. (At least I can’t…)

I can’t wait to get my hands on Season 2. No wonder people have been babbling about this show so much. :)

I assume the set you got had the miniseries included? I think it was a retailer-exclusive set that came out earlier and without the miniseries, so I doubt it’d be widespread in rental places.

I really, really like him. Not so much for him being a good person, but it’s always interesting to see what he’ll do next.

This is something they just haven’t covered well. As the show tries to be more realistic than most scifi shows I think they didn’t want to try and get away with completely ignoring the problem, but neither have they gone into detail about what solution they had to have come up with.

Yeah, the set I rented had the miniseries on the first disc.

Re: Gaius… My friend Rob, also a BSG fanatic, said the same thing. He finds him to be an interesting character. I can see where you guys are coming from, but I still dislike him. He’s just a nasty little self-centered snake in my eyes. :P

Re: Food… Gotcha’. Hopefully they’ll touch on it sometime. They could easily make it the focus of a whole episode, just like the water / fuel episodes.
