Over the weekend I was very seriously thinking about starting to watch Battlestar Galactica. I decided I’d really like to watch it, so I went about getting myself up-to-speed on the story. I had no desire to go back and watch seasons 1 and 2 before beginning to watch season 3, seeing as I’m already working on the ancient seasons of Stargate. So, I wanted to get an idea of the main storyline for seasons 1 and 2, then get caught up on the four episodes from season 3 that I’d missed thus far. (Season 3 started October 6th; too bad I hadn’t thought of doing this before - I could’ve saved myself $6).
Luckily, the SciFi channel made something to help people like me: Battlestar Galactica: The Story so Far. It’s a 45 minute, highly condensed recap of seasons 1 and 2. I grabbed it off of iTunes (it’s free) and watched all of it. I was pretty much hooked from just watching it. I went ahead and grabbed the 4 episodes off of iTunes as well (unfortunatly, not free). As of about half an hour ago, I’ve watched all 4, so I’m ready for the airing of Collaborators this coming Friday.
After watching the recap and the first four episodes of season 3, along with a heavy dosage of reading up on the characters, I really wish I’d taken folks’ advice when Battlestar first came out. I was told by quite a few friends that it was an awesome show, and that I should start watching it. I was a doof and didn’t, and man, I know I missed out. Even the ultra-condensed recap was entertaining! Season 3 is thus far amazing.
Some random thoughts about the show from a Battlestar newbie:
- The Cylon centurions are creepy as all hell.
- Admiral Adama is my favorite character, but Galen Tyrol is a very, very close second. As a facial hair aside, he looked far better with a beard.
- Speaking of, am I getting confused, or did they screw up the timeframe a bit between episodes 3 and 4 with Galen’s beard? At the end of episode 3, Galen had a beard. At the beginning of episode 4, they were covering stuff an hour earlier in time. And yet at that point, Galen didn’t have a beard. Either I’m confused, Galen can grow a beard really fast, or they screwed up.
- I find the whole concept of mechanical beings being highly religious a bit odd. Did anyone else find this peculiar, or is it just me?
- Kara finding out that Kasey wasn’t really her child at the end of Exodus, Part 2 really, really sucked.
I think that was one of the few (only?) times I’ve ever come even close to crying while watching a sci-fi show. - Colonel Tigh reminds me a great deal of a sailor.
I’m hooked. I’m really, really hooked. No wonder everyone’s been babbling about this show so much. I can’t wait until Friday’s episode.

“I had no desire to go back and watch seasons 1 and 2 before beginning to watch season 3″
DUMBASS. Now you’ve spoiled the experience of watching 40-ish great episodes for the first time, just to rush to 4 (really really) awesome ones. From watching that condensed episode probably the biggest twists and turns will not be a surprise to you, but it’s really worth going back and watching.
But oh man, Galactica jumping into the atmosphere, launching the rescue ships and jumping back out shortly before reaching the ground, oh man.
“I find the whole concept of mechanical beings being highly religious a bit odd. Did anyone else find this peculiar, or is it just me?”
Well, clearly they’re not totally mechanical anymore. The biggest thing I find weird is that we so far just don’t know how they got these beliefs.
“Colonel Tigh reminds me a great deal of a sailor.”
In these last few episodes, yeah, but it’s a very different situation than he’d been in previously, so you wouldn’t think that from earlier shows.

“DUMBASS.”
Lol. Subtle.
It was a trade off I was willing to make. As I mentioned to my BSG junkie friend Rob, by the time I’d caught up on seasons 1 and 2, season 3 would be over. However, now that I’m “on board” for the currently running season, I figure I’ll go back and watch the previous seasons at my leisure.
And yeah, Galactica falling towards the planet, launching the ships, then jumping right before smashing into the ground… “wow”, indeed.
Re: religious robots… yeah, Rob mentioned that it hasn’t really been explained where they got it from.

I do, though, find it interesting how it seems thus far that good guys = polytheism, and bad guys = monotheism.
It also makes phrases like “Oh my gods!” seem fresh thanks to the twist.
