The Undersigned has a blog survey up over here. I figured I’d answer his 20 questions. The survey has (mostly) multiple choice answers, which you can see on the original post.
1. When did you start blogging?
Hmm. I’m not sure. I think my first blog was launched in 2004. Someone who read my original blog and has a better memory than me (like Joshua Slone) may correct me on this.
2. Average, how often do you blog?
Once or more a day on average.
3. How do you host your blog?
I’m using a free blogging service. As a note, I did pay for a CSS upgrade so I could customize the look of my blog. So, more like a paid hosting service as opposed to free. Sort of.
4. What blogging application / service do you use?
WordPress.com.
5. Do you use an application to blog directly from your desktop, rather than from your blog’s administration?
Nope.
6. Do you use a free theme for your blog?
No, I made one myself. As another note, my theme is custom made, but it’s built on the ’skeleton’ theme on WordPress.com, Sandbox. So I guess you could say it’s both made by someone else, and made by me. And no Thomas, I’m really not going out of my way to be difficult here!
7. What type of blogging do you do?
Personal.
8. What is your primary blogging motivation?
I like it.
9. Do you care much about the amount of visitors?
No.
10. Does the total account of visitors on your blog count more to you, than the amount of visitors who comment on your blog posts?
I’m not really sure if I understand this question. Is it supposed to be ‘does the total amount‘? If that’s the case, no. If I had to choose between tons and tons of traffic and few comments, and low amounts of traffic but with lots of discussion, I’d choose the latter.
11. Do you use some sort of anti spam solution for your blog comments? (Such as Akismet)
Yes, Akismet, which is built into my WordPress.com account.
12. If you run advertisements on your blog, do you sell the ads yourself?
Doesn’t apply to me.
13. If you earn money on advertising on your blog, how much do you approximately earn per month?
$0.
14. If you are running a business blog – has it helped your business to start blogging?
Doesn’t apply to me.
15. Are you a member of a blogging network such as random shapes or 9rules?
No.
16. If you are member of a blogging network – has it helped you noticeable in any way?
Not a member of any blogging networks.
17. How many daily unique visitors does your blog have?
0-100.
18. Do you keep statistics of feed subscribers?
The only statistics I have for feed subscribers are the very basic ones provided by WordPress.com. I take a looksie at them, but I don’t save them.
19. Do you put work into search engine optimisation for your blog?
Yeah. I’ll usually put some Technorati tags into most posts to help folks find stuff by topic.
20. Have you ever bought advertisement on other websites for your blog?
No.

Ahahaha. It is kinda hard to keep track. Once you decide to abandon a particular attempt, you tend to burn the evidence.
2004 sounds rightish for a blog proper, as you’d been doing it some months when Daelan was born. If you count the lesser LJ efforts, though, that probably goes back a couple more years.

Hah, indeed about burning the evidence. Or rather, I just put the evidence in a safe, private place.
This reminded me of the fact that I had a database backup plugin installed on my original blog, which sent a daily DB backup to an email address of mine. In checking the last database file that was sent to the email address, it would appear that I first started blogging (in ernest) in July of 2004.
I wouldn’t really count my earlier LJ efforts at all. Not only were they extremely sporadic (like, months apart), but they were also just.. crappy. I was depressed, angry, and generally just an annoying teenager.

Hey, don’t be TOO hard on yourself… it makes me look like a goon for virtually hanging out with you!

Hah.
Hey, I consider myself to be an okay person now, so you’re not a goon for hanging out with me now.
However, when I was a teenager? Yeah, you were goon-ish. I was a real ass back then.
