A del.icio.us request

I just started using my del.icio.us account after a long stint of inactivity. I’d missed it. I see they’ve done some pretty nifty things during my absence. In particular, working with links has been AJAX-ified, so it makes the whole ordeal quick and simple.

However…

There is a gripe I have. I saw that you can import bookmarks from your browser. That’s pretty darn cool. The not-so-cool part is this. On the import page, there’s this note:

Bookmarks you import will be kept private. We encourage you to share them after importing; that way, everyone can benefit.

Okay, fair enough. I’m all for sharing my bookmarks with all of the other del.icio.us users. Without that feature del.icio.us simply wouldn’t exist, basically.

The problem is that there is no easy way (that I can find, anyway!) to make all of your imported bookmarks shared. There’s no checkmark on the import page; there’s no ‘edit all links’ option anywhere. To share your newly imported links, you have to go through your links, one by one, clicking “share”, then “yes” (in response to “do you want to share this link?”).

If someone is importing 10 or 15 links, this isn’t a huge deal. If they’ve just imported 300 or 400 links, this would be.. annoying.

In other words, it makes little sense to recommend that users share imported links for the benefit of all, while simultaneously not giving users a quick and easy way to do so.

Fixy, please!

Oh, and by the way. If there’s a way to do what I’m talking about and you know about it, let me know in the comments. Not only will I appreciate it greatly, but I’ll also take back everything I said in this entry.

Except this: del.icio.us still rocks.

You can download a firefox extension which automatically clicks all the ‘do you want to share’ buttons, and submits it to the server.
